In this section, we will take a closer look at the structure of a database management system (DBMS). We will find out what things a DBMS actually needs to create and maintain even simple databases.

In addition, in this section, we will learn the basics of conceptual modelling, i.e., how to distinguish essential concepts and relationships from "real world" things relevant to the domain. We will specifically get to know the ER model, which is a conceptual model created specifically for databases.
