Course completion
Work tasks
Practical training can be done in any company, research institute, office, or community. Accepted tasks have usually been software design and programming, software installation and maintenance, or some other computer related tasks. Ordinary office work (such as text editing, spreadsheet computing, or updating web pages) is not enough. Students should always make sure in advance that the tasks are suitable for practical training.
Acquiring work
Students should start to look for suitable working places early enough. Please note that the University or its faculties do not act as an employment agency, but finding a working place is up to students own activity.
Duration of the work and study credits
The amount of credits depends on the duration of the work, according to the table below. Only full working days (in full-time work) or hours worked (in part-time work) are counted, not weekends or other periods off work. The total amount of credits can be at most 12 cr. Please note that if the course TIEA304 has been included in the Bachelor's degree, the amount of credits cannot be changed anymore, even if it is less than the maximum amount.
Full-time work | Part-time work | Study credits |
---|---|---|
33 days | 250 hours | 5 cr |
40 days | 300 hours | 6 cr |
47 days | 350 hours | 7 cr |
53 days | 400 hours | 8 cr |
60 days | 450 hours | 9 cr |
67 days | 500 hours | 10 cr |
73 days | 550 hours | 11 cr |
80 days | 600 hours | 12 cr |
Inclusion of the practical training in degrees
TIEA304 is a subject studies course, so as a rule, it is included in the Bachelor's degree. If you already have a Bachelor's degree, you cannot complete the course TIEA304 anymore. If you have working experience suitable for advanced studies, it is possible to include in the Master's degree the course TIES599 Professional Training.
Reporting
Report
After the practical training student should write a report. It is not so important to say what you have done, but instead to explain what you have learned. Suggested length of the report is two pages, and at least the following things should be mentioned:
- Student's name and contact information.
- Name of the employer, and the starting and ending dates of the employment. If the employment has been part-time work, then also an account of weekly working time or total number of working hours.
- Short, general description of the work tasks. This is not the main subject of the report, so do not write too detailed description. Also, do not write any company secrets in the report.
- Personal assessment on the compatibility of studies and training. Which studies were useful during the training? Was the training useful when you think of your future studies? Is something important missing from your studies?
- Personal assessment on learning. What did you know before training? What have you learned during training? What are your strengths? In what areas you need more practice? How your language and communication skills have developed? How your working habits and methods have changed? Will the training affect to your study methods in the future? This is the most important part of the report.
- Short assessment also on the employer. How suitable this working place is for the practical training in Mathematical Information Technology?
Certificate
In addition, the report should contain also a duly signed certificate from the employer.
