Deadlines policy

TIES542 Principles of Programming Languages, Spring 2017

The following policy applies to all deadlines set on this course unless otherwise indicated.

What happens if I miss a deadline?

If you miss a deadline you will not get credit from the corresponding task even if you complete the task.

(See the next section on how you can ask for a deadline extension before the deadline.)

However, if you missed a deadline but you have a very good excuse, you should contact the teacher as soon as possible. If he considers your excuse sufficiently good, he will grant you a retroactive extension to the deadline.

Your excuse must explain

  • why you missed the deadline,
  • why you did not ask for an extension before the deadline, and
  • why it took you as long as it did to contact the teacher about your excuse.

Your excuse is likely sufficient if it involves unexpected circumstances that are beyond your control and which you are not expected to be prepared for. For example your own acute illness may be a sufficient excuse.

Excuses involving your own negligence or deliberate choices about this course are usually not sufficient. See below for how to restart the course after dropping out.

What should I do if I think I may miss a particular deadline?

You should contact the teacher as soon as possible but before the deadline to request an extension to the deadline. You should send the request by email (antti-juhani.kaijanaho@jyu.fi) and include the following information:

  • Which deadline(s) is this extension applied for?
  • Which student(s) this extension is applied for?
  • What is the reason for the request?
  • What new deadline would be realistic?
  • Why was the suggested new deadline chosen?

A requested extension is granted if the reason given is a good one given all the circumstances.

The same policy applies to deadlines that have already been extended. You may ask for another extension should you need one.

What should I do if I want to (re)start this course after some deadlines have expired?

You should contact the teacher as soon as possible by email. The email should answer the following questions:

  • Why did you not start the course at the regular time? Or if you did, why did you drop out of the course originally?
  • What consequences will there be to your studies if you are not allowed to complete the course now?
  • What extensions to deadlines would you consider sufficient so that you can realistically complete the course?

If the teacher considers your answers to the first two questions compelling, he will grant the extensions you request in your answer to the third question (possibly after discussing them with you further).
