Familiarize yourself with the exam rules and instructions below at the latest before registering for the exam.
Rule Change Log
7.4.2026:
- Clarified that English lecture slides and lecture notes can be used. Both are found in the TIM system.
25.3.2026:
- Removed the mention of relational algebra-related tasks from the "Other Instructions and Information about the Exam" section.
- Emphasized that questions related to relational algebra will not be presented in the actual exam. This rule applies to spring and summer 2026.

University of Jyväskylä Instructions for Taking Online Exams
Taking an Online Exam
- You enroll for an online exam according to the instructions of the exam organizer.
- The online exam is an individual exam, unless the exam organizer has instructed otherwise. It is taken without direct or indirect help from outside persons.
- You log in to the system where the online exam is organized with the University of Jyväskylä username and password. The username is personal, and you must not hand over your own credentials to other persons.
- The online exam is taken during the time reserved for it.
- The online exam may be taken on a computer, tablet, or phone. It is recommended to take the exam on a computer.
- Contact and communication with outside persons during the taking of the online exam is prohibited.
- The exam organizer gives detailed instructions before the exam on possible materials, supplies, and tools that may be used for taking the exam. (See course exam rules in the following subsection.)
- During the taking of the online exam, University of Jyväskylä VPN connection may be used if necessary, but not other VPN connections.
- If your connection to the online exam system is cut off during the taking of the exam, notify the exam organizer about it after the exam.
Supervision of Online Exam and Processing of Personal Data
- The university supervises the taking of online exams with available means. The university can use primarily log data collected by information systems or live image and secondarily video and audio recordings for supervision.
- The university can verify the student's identity during the exam.
- Sensitive personal data is not processed in connection with the supervision of online exams.
- In the processing of personal data, the university's data protection and information security instructions are followed.
Following Online Exam Instructions and Cheating in Online Exam
- The student has an absolute obligation to familiarize themselves with the instructions given before the exam and follow them in detail.
- The student participating in the exam is aware that the University of Jyväskylä supervises the taking of the online exam and the following of online exam instructions with available means.
- Exam answers can be processed with plagiarism detection software with the student's consent.
- Cheating and attempted cheating in an exam is prohibited. In cases of suspected cheating, the rector's decision on ethical instructions for studying and handling of cheating cases at the University of Jyväskylä is followed. Cheating always leads to failing of the course performance and may lead to a written remark, written warning, or temporary suspension.

Taking the Exam
- Enrollment for the exam is done with the form at the bottom of this page, when it is published. You can enroll for the exam no later than 3 days before its start time.
- The exam is an online exam, which is completed under remote supervision via the Zoom video application.
- During the exam, the student must share the screens of all their displays as well as a video feed of themselves. Acquiring the necessary equipment is the student's responsibility.
- The exam begins when the supervisor grants permission to take the exam.
- From the start of the exam, the student has 2 hours to complete the exam. Notify during enrollment if you have been granted extra time for exams as an individual arrangement.
- The supervisor has the right to ask to show video feed of the surroundings or ask to turn on the microphone.
- The supervisor has the right to ask to perform actions on the computer, such as opening the task manager.
- The supervisor has the right to ask the student to prove their identity during the exam.
Materials and Supplies Allowed in Exam
- A computer may be used to provide exam answers.
- During the exam, you may use self-made electronic or physically written notes.
- During the exam, you may use note-taking tools to plan your answers.
- In the exam, only materials found on the course's TIM pages may be used, such as text materials of parts, exercises, lecture recordings, and lecture slides. This also covers English lecture notes and lecture slides published in PDF format.
- The exam page includes a free SQL coding area where you can freely run and test SQL commands.
Tools and Methods Prohibited in Online Exam
- The use of ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or similar generative AI technologies is prohibited.
- The use of websites outside the course's TIM pages is prohibited.
- The exam is an individual exam. Communication with others during the exam is strictly prohibited.
Processing of Personal Data in Online Exam
- Activity logs collected by the TIM system can be used to investigate suspected cheating cases. System data is collected and processed according to the system's own privacy notice.
- Live image, video, or audio recordings are not collected.
Other Instructions and Information about the Exam
- The exam covers course sections 2.1-6.3 and lectures 1-8.
- The main focus of the exam is on the technical content of the course, such as ER modeling, transforming, SQL language, and normalization. The exam may also contain isolated theory questions, the answers to which can be found in the course material.
- In the spring and summer of 2026, the course exam will not include questions related to relational algebra, which has only been presented in lectures.
- The exam is automatically graded. The exam may contain multiple-choice questions, writing queries in SQL language, transforming ER diagrams into relational schemas, and normalizing relations based on given functional dependencies.
- The final grading scale of the exam is determined per exam, and it is published always after the exam.
